The Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures (LAIC) at Columbia University in the City of New York fosters a deep understanding of the multiple languages, histories, and cultures of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Pedagogical rigor and innovative research sustain our intellectual mission and define every level of our curriculum.

In the Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures, we are disheartened by the events unfolding on campus. We are concerned for the safety, academic progress, classroom experience, and rights of our students. We condemn all forms of hate speech, harassment, and incitements to violence. We call on the university administration to engage with the student protestors and representatives and ensure due process to all our students. The presence of the NYPD on campus and in and around the Casa Hispánica has caused serious distress among members of our community, some of whom have as a result felt unable to fully participate in the life of the department. As always, but especially now, we dedicate ourselves to supporting our students and all other members of our community in the Casa Hispánica.
