The Turn of the Canoe

An exploration of Guimarães Rosa's "The Third Bank of the River," where place becomes an infinite problem.

Valereto, Deneb Kozikoski. “The Turn of the Canoe.” Glass Bead Journal.  Site 0: Castalia, the Game of Ends and Means. (2016). Web.

Unraveling the duality of sense and the expression of paradox in João Guimarães Rosa’s short story “The Third Bank of the River,” this essay seeks to challenge modernity’s progressive thesis. Exploring the colonial and anthropological sources of a unilateral account of universalism, the essay establishes connections between “The Third Bank of the River,” cybernetic and anthropological theories, and semiotic techniques of communication between disaparate styles of thought.
