In this content-based course, students are exposed to a substantial amount of language through the exploration of three countries: Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Their history, type of government, politics and principal cultural manifestations are presented in readings and audiovisual material that include speeches from political figures, newspaper clippings, political blogs, documentaries, poems, short stories and a novel by Junot Diaz. Students will assume active roles in the classroom by becoming – each of them – the moderator of the round table that every week will discuss some of the reading assignments. Grammar and vocabulary will be related to the topics discussed in each reading.
