Advanced language through content: Spain in its Art

Syllabus

The course follows a parallel study of the History and the Art of Spain from the Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century. Through historical, literary and art texts, slides, videos and music students explore, discover and reconstruct the History of Spain through its wonderful Art, as they continue to develop and hone their linguistic competence in the Spanish language.

El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Gaudí, Miró, Picasso and Dalí were not only great artists but also witnesses and illustrators of their respective societies and historical time frames. Through their works we can delve into the Counter-Reformation, the court intrigues and mishaps that lead to the fall of an Empire; we can face the crude reality of the Spanish society during the “Golden Age”; we can trace the deeply rooted division in Spain that will eventually explode in a Civil War, and we can also marvel at the Catalan modernization that will allow for new artistic expressions.

As a final project the class will create their own volume of an iBook which will reconstruct and showcase the magnificent History of Spanish Art.
