Hispanic Cultures II: Literature and Visual Arts

This class will focus on the principal literary/aesthetic movements in Spain and Spanish America during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, among them: Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, modernismo, Generation of 1898, the vanguard, criollismo. We will explore the defining features of these movements through the discussion of representative selections by well-known writers and artists, among them Goya, Larra, Bécquer, Martí Alsina, Pardo Bazán, Darío, Unamuno, Picasso, Dalí, J. Guillén, García Lorca, Agustini, Quiroga, N. Guillén, Asturias, Mario Carreño, Frida Kahlo. All of the readings, as well as the class discussion and written work, will be in Spanish.
