Alfred Mac Adam

Alfred Mac Adam has been a professor of Latin American literature at Barnard College-Columbia University since 1983. He previously taught at Princeton University, Yale University, and the University of Virginia. His area of specialization is 20th-century Latin American narrative, a subject on which he has published three books and numerous articles.

Mac Adam is a regular art reviewer for The Brooklyn Rail. He is also a translator of Latin American writing and has translated novels by Carlos Fuentes, Mario Vargas Llosa, José Donoso, Alejo Carpentier, Reinaldo Arenas, Julio Cortázar, Juan Carlos Onetti, Osvaldo Soriano, Alfredo Bryce Echenique, and Jorge Volpi. He has also translated from the Portuguese a selection of Fernando Pessoa's Book of Disquiet, and Machado de Assis’s novella The Immortal. He also published a selection of Jorge Luis Borges' writing on Argentina with Penguin Books. His translation of Fernando Aramburu's Patria (Random House) appeared in the spring of 2019. His translation of Juan Villoro's Vertigo horizontal (a portrait of Mexico City) appeared in June of 2021.
