Portuguese Language Placement Examination

All students new to Columbia’s Portuguese Language Program who wish to start at a higher level are required to take the Department’s Placement Examination before registering for a course or provide proof of exemption. If you plan to take PORT 1101 or 1320, you may register without our approval. 

The Placement Examination in Portuguese consists of two parts: one written and one oral.  The written part tests knowledge of grammar, reading comprehension, and writing composition.  The written exam is followed by an interview that tests oral comprehension.  It is offered in the fall and spring semesters at Casa Hispánica during the first week of classes (Spring 2027: Tuesday, January 19, 6 p.m., in room 201). Fulbright Evaluations

If you need a language evaluation for a Fulbright program, we are happy to provide one. Fulbright language evaluations are offered on the same dates as our placement exams. Please note that we cannot offer evaluations at other times during the semester, so we encourage you to plan accordingly and select one of the dates listed above.
