The Catalan Program
About The Catalan Program at Columbia
C is for Catalan, the language of Catalonia. It is also the letter that drives the 5 objectives that, following the ACTFL standards, guide our foreign language teaching: communication, connections, comparisons, culture and community. Throughout the 5 Catalan Language courses offered at Columbia, these five C’s remain essential: classes are designed with a main focus on communication, understood as “Knowing how, when, and why to say what to whom”. This will allow the students to establish connections to other knowledges and, through comparisons with the language studied, to develop insight into its nature, and thus becoming aware of the multiple ways to perceive and understand the world. These strategies will be key when trying to gain an understanding of the culture that will enable their participation in a new and fascinating language community.
