The Spanish Language Program
About The Spanish Language Program at Columbia
Language permeates all aspects of our lives. It is the primary sociocultural tool for cognitive development, through which we form thoughts and acquire knowledge of the world around us. Spanish is deeply embedded in New York City, with rich historic ties to the Spanish-speaking world and a community of approximately 2 million speakers. Our Spanish Language Program prepares you to critically engage with the language, its regions, cultures, literatures, and arts in a contextualized way, because languages thrive within their context. The program equips you to interact effectively in both everyday and academic environments, drawing from diverse cultural perspectives. You will gain the cultural and communicative competence needed to engage critically in multilingual communities where Spanish is present, both locally and globally.
