Javiera Irribarren Ortiz

Javiera Irribarren-Ortiz is a Ph.D. candidate in Latin American and Iberian Cultures at Columbia University. She holds an MA in Literature and a double Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic Literature and Aesthetics from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Since 2012, she has taught in high school and undergraduate levels, and worked in DEI projects for educational communities. She has collaborated in Chilean state-funded research projects and published articles on Latin American science fiction, comics, and audiovisual culture. At Columbia University, Javiera teaches Spanish language and culture courses. Her dissertation focuses on 21st-century speculative fiction comics from Brazil and Chile, whose decolonial approach critically engages with representations of Indigenous consciousness, environmental and multispecies justice, and (post)apocalyptic scenarios. She is a member of the Red de Investigadoras e Investigadores de Narrativa Gráfica en Latinoamérica (RING-Latam) and the Asociación de Literatura de Ciencia Ficción y Fantástica Chilena (ALCiFF).
