Biography

Dr. Lorena García Barroso holds a Spanish Lecturer Position at the Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures at Columbia University, New York City. Dr. García Barroso obtained her PhD in Hispanic Linguistics at the Graduate Center, The City University of New York in 2017. She specialized in Sociolinguistics, Spanish as Second Language, Critical Discourse Analysis and Language Ideologies. She has several peer-reviewed publications in academic journals and in academic books. In addition to her academic publications, Dr. García Barroso has presented her academic work at national and international conferences regularly as a presenter and a keynote speaker.

Dr. García Barroso has editorial experience as well. She was the general manager of the academic journal LLJournal of the department of Latin American, Iberian and Latin Cultures at The Graduate Center (CUNY). She has been a External Referee of Doctoral Thesis at the Department of English Philology at University of Huelva (Spain). She has been an external reviewer of several papers in Signo y Pensamiento Journal of the College of Communication and Language at the Pontifical Xavierian University in Bogotá (Colombia). In addition, she has been a reviewer for the 9th International Workshop on Spanish Sociolinguistics organized by Queens College in New York.

Dr. García Barroso pedagogic experience is vast. In Europe, Dr. García Barroso taught Spanish in Germany and France. She was able to teach in France, at Mount-de-Marsan, thanks to a fellowship from the Ministry of Education and Science in Spain. In the United States, she has taught all levels of college Spanish, including language and literature courses, initial and advanced conversation courses and Spanish classes for heritage speakers. Dr. García Barroso teaching experience also covers many different types of academic institutions. For instance, Dr. García Barroso held a positions as a Lector of Spanish at Yale University. She has taught Spanish also at Fordham University, Hunter College (CUNY), Fashion Institute of Technology (SUNY), John Jay College (CUNY), Hostos Community College (CUNY), City College (CUNY), College of Mount Saint Vincent and Manhattan College.
