Dr. Velásquez Nimatuj is internationally recognized for her scholarship and activism on Indigenous rights, racism, gender, land, and decolonial thought.

Dr. Velásquez Nimatuj was the first Maya-K’iche’ woman to earn a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology, and has been a leading voice for indigenous justice in Guatemala; her landmark discrimination case helped establish racial discrimination as a crime in the country. She is the author of La pequeña burguesía indígena comercial de Guatemala (2002) and Pueblos Indígenas, Estado y Lucha por Tierra en Guatemala (2008), among others.
