About the film:
El fotógrafo de La 40 reveals the story of photographer Pedro Aníbal Fuentes Berg, who was sent to take pictures at the clandestine “La 40” prison—a torture center established during the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo (1930–1961) in the Dominican Republic. Driven by an inescapable sense of duty to expose the horrors endured by political opponents within the prison, Fuentes Berg decided to release the images to the world. Some of his photographs became iconic symbols of the barbarity of the Trujillo dictatorship. The film explores questions of photography, archives, historical memory, and the representation of political violence.
