Gira de Carolinas is a solo physical theater performance by Selma Trevino inspired by the Afro-Brazilian religious Umbanda ritual, giving voice to warrior women erased from history. Through movement, text, and live percussion, the performer becomes a vessel for iconic female figures, guiding the audience through a ritual journey of memory, resilience, and transformation.
This work-in-progress, first presented during a shared evening curated by PhysFestNYC, clearly demonstrates the core elements of Trevino's current artistic practice: the integration of physical theater, ritual, and Brazilian cultural references. The scene incorporates text from "A Gota d’Água" by Chico Buarque, a Brazilian adaptation of Euripides’ Medea.
